Impact of male condition on his spermatophore and consequences for female reproductive performance in the Glanville fritillary butterfly

Impact of the Horizontal Heat Flux in the Mixed Layer on anExtreme Heat Event in North China: A Case Study

【摘要】<p>Extreme heat over the North China Plain is typically induced by anomalous descending flows associated with anticycloniccirculation anomalies. However, an extreme heat event that happened in the North China Plain region on 12–13 July 2015,with maximum temperature higher than 40C at some stations, was characterized by only a weak simultaneous appearance ofan anomalous anticyclone and descending flow, suggesting that some other factor(s) may have induced this heat event. In thisstudy, we used the forecast data produced by the Beijing Rapid Updated Cycling operational forecast system, which predictedthe heat event well, to investigate the formation mechanism of this extreme heat event. We calculated the cumulative heatin the mixed-layer air column of North China to represent the change in surface air temperature. The cumulative heat wascomposed of sensible heat flux from the ground surface and the horizontal heat flux convergence. The results indicated thatthe horizontal heat flux in the mixed layer played a crucial role in the temporal and spatial distribution of high temperatures.</p><p>The horizontal heat flux was found to be induced by distinct distributions of air temperatures and horizontal winds at lowlevels during the two days, implying a complexity of the low-level atmosphere in causing the extreme heat.</p><p><br/></p>

Impact of Blade Untwist on Transonic High-Bypass-Ratio Fan Performance

【摘要】The impact of blade untwist on transonic high-bypass-ratio fan performance was studied by using an in-house blade deformation code based on fluid-structure coupling algorithm in which nonlinear effect of unsteady aerodynamic loads were considered. Firstly, the blade shape with centrifugal loads was calculated using ANSYS finite element code starting from the manufacture blade shape (“cold” blade). Secondly, blade running shapes (‘hot” blade) under different aerodynamic conditions were worked out through the deformation code. Finally, aerodynamic characteristic lines of the fan obtained with blade running shapes and the fixed design blade shape respectively were generated. The results show that blade untwist determined by aerodynamic loads has effects on the fan aerodynamic performance. The displacements caused by centrifugal and aerodynamic loads counteract each other more or less depending on operation conditions. Blade untwist angles were calculated for different aerodynamic conditions which lead to some changes in stagger angles. Mass flow rate at choke point for the ‘hot’’ blade shape is 4kg/s less than that for the design blade shape, and in opposite stall mass flow rate is 2 kg/s more than that for the design shape.

A new species of the endemic Himalayan genusLiurana (Anura, Ceratobatrachidae) from southeasternTibet, China, with comments on the distribution,reproductive biology, and conservation of the genus

【摘要】A new species of the genus Liurana Dubois, 1986 isdescribed from Medog County, Tibet, China, based onmorphological and molecular data. The new speciescan be differentiated from all other congeners by thefollowing combination of characters: (1) head widerthan long; (2) tympanum distinct and large; (3) hindlimblong, tibiotarsal articulation beyond tip of snout whenadpressed; (4) belly with flat tubercles, cloacal regionwith small tubercles; (5) transverse bands distinctly ondorsal limbs, four bands on thigh and three on tibia;and, (6) dark brown marbled patterns or speckles onwhite belly. Here, we also discuss the distribution patternof Liurana in the East Himalaya region, the role of theYarlung Tsangpo River in the speciation and geneticisolation of congeners, the direct developmental mode ofreproduction, and the two different ecotypes of the genus. Lastly, we provide conservation recommendations for thegenus in southeastern Tibet.

A Discussion on the Origin and Distribution of the Hui and Tibetans in the Tibetan-¥i Corridor

【摘要】<p>The Hui and Tibetans, who are found in the Tibetan-Yi corridor, are the most numerous and widely distributed ethnic groups in China. They both have unique cultures and religions ,and are very influential ethnic groups. According to the 2010 demographic census, the population of Tibetans in China is 6,282,187. Most of them live in the Tibet Autonomous Region while others live in ten other Tibetan autonomous prefectures and counties, for example in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai,Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County in Gansu and Muli Tibetan Autonomous County in Sichuan, etc. The population of the Hui is 10,586,087, and they are distributed in various provinces, prefectures, cities and counties in China.</p>

Impact of the Spring SST Gradient between the Tropical Indian Ocean andWestern Pacific on Landfalling Tropical Cyclone Frequency in China

【摘要】<p>The present study identifies a significant influence of the sea surface temperature gradient (SSTG) between the tropical IndianOcean (TIO; 15S–15N, 40–90E) and the western Pacific warm pool (WWP; 0–15N, 125–155E) in boreal springon tropical cyclone (TC) landfall frequency in mainland China in boreal summer. During the period 1979–2015, a positivespring SSTG induces a zonal inter-basin circulation anomaly with lower-level convergence, mid-tropospheric ascendanceand upper-level divergence over the west-central TIO, and the opposite situation over the WWP, which produces lower-levelanomalous easterlies and upper-level anomalous westerlies between the TIO and WWP. This zonal circulation anomaly furtherwarms the west-central TIO by driving warm water westward and cools the WWP by inducing local upwelling, whichfacilitates the persistence of the anomaly until the summer. Consequently, lower-level negative vorticity, strong vertical windshear and lower-level anticyclonic anomalies prevail over most of the western North Pacific (WNP), which decreases the TCgenesis frequency. Meanwhile, there is an anomalous mid-tropospheric anticyclone over the main WNP TC genesis region,meaning a westerly anomaly dominates over coastal regions of mainland China, which is unfavorable for steering TCs tomake landfall in mainland China during summer. This implies that the spring SSTG may act as a potential indicator for TClandfall frequency in mainland China.</p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>

Female choice impacts resident male takeover in goldensnub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana)

【摘要】In primate species with social systems consistingof one-male breeding units (OMUs), resident maletakeover represents a major challenge to individualreproductive success and mating strategies. Thegolden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana)is characterized by large multilevel societies (MLS)comprised of several OMUs and all-male units (AMUs);however, the factors and mechanisms associated withresident male takeover, which offer important insightinto primate reproduction and social strategies, arestill poorly understood. Based on 5-year monitoringdata from a free-ranging herd of golden monkeysfrom the Qinling Mountains in China, we categorizedthree phases of an OMU, that is, a rising phase,developing phase, and declining phase. The risingand declining phases were unstable periods in whichmale takeover in an OMU might occur. Factors causing takeover, such as leader male rank, fightingability, reproduction rate, and affiliation (proximity,allogrooming), were analyzed for males and femalesand for different OMUs. Results indicated that thenew resident male’s fighting ability was lower thanthat of the former resident male in 23 cases. Afterreplacement, the rank order of the new residentmale significantly declined. Females involved in atakeover increased their distance from the residentmale and decreased mating frequency during the threemonths prior to takeover. Females with infants underone-year-old had a marked effect on the specific timeof takeover occurrence. These results suggested thatfemale choice was the main factor deciding whether atakeover attempt was successful. Furthermore, ratherthan male conflict, females more often initiated andaffected takeover and outcome, implying that the socialstatus and competitive ability of the males playedlesser roles during takeover

Impact of the Winter North Pacific Oscillation on the Surface Air Temperatureover Eurasia and North America: Sensitivity to the Index Definition

【摘要】<p>This study analyzes the impact of the winter North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) on the surface air temperature (SAT)variations over Eurasia and North America based on six dierent NPO indices. Results show that the influences of thewinter NPO on the SAT over Eurasia and North America are sensitive to the definition of the NPO index. The impact of thewinter NPO on the SAT variations over Eurasia (North America) is significant (insignificant) when the anticyclonic anomalyassociated with the NPO index over the North Pacific midlatitudes shifts westward and pronounced northerly wind anomaliesappear around Lake Baikal. By contrast, the impact of the winter NPO on the SAT variations over Eurasia (North America)is insignificant (significant) when the anticyclonic anomaly over the North Pacific related to the NPO index shifts eastwardand the associated northerly wind anomalies to its eastern flank extend to North America. The present study suggests that theNPO definition should be taken into account when analyzing the impact of the winter NPO on Eurasian and North AmericanSAT variations.</p><p><br/></p>
